A Cosmetic Bonding Treatment Can Help Address a Minor Physical Defect on a Tooth’s Enamel Layer

Posted .

Each of your teeth is clad in a durable layer of tooth enamel. It provides your teeth with the strength to bite and chew food while also protecting the sensitive internal structures. When tooth enamel is chipped the physical defect can start to trap plaque and other bacterial deposits which could contribute to tooth decay. Some patients with a chipped front tooth also feel self-conscious when they smile.

If you have a chipped tooth, you should have it examined as soon as possible by one of our contracted dentists. After examining the tooth they will explain your treatment options.

If the defect in the tooth’s enamel layer is minor they might recommend a cosmetic bonding treatment. The process effectively laminates and seals the affected area of tooth enamel with a special composite resin, which can be shaded to match the surrounding natural tooth enamel.

The treatment calls for your dentist to lightly etch the adjacent tooth enamel to prepare the proper surface texture for bonding the dental resin. Once it has been applied and shaped the area of composite resin will be hardened with a special ultraviolet light.

Next, we will provide you with any follow-up instructions to help maintain the tooth’s overall appearance.
